About ring resizing
How are rings resized? The technique used is determined by many factors – material type, adjustment size, and whether the ring will become smaller or larger.
One ring resizing method is soldering, when a jeweler removes or adds a small portion of the band, reshapes the ring, then uses a torch to close the gap. Jewelers mask the alteration by creating nearly invisible welds and polishing the ring band.
Simple rings, like wedding bands, can be altered slightly by stretching or compressing the metal of the ring shank.
Can my ring be resized? Most gold or silver rings can be resized by a skilled jeweler. However, some rings are unable to be resized due to elaborate gemstone settings, incompatible plating, unusual shapes, heat-sensitive gemstones, or ornate surface designs. |
